Convenience and coolness are the biggest reasons people invest in home automation systems.

But that doesn’t mean you can’t also use home automation to save money. Here are a few ways we’ve seen it work well.

Reduce heating and cooling costs

Home automation can help you reduce your heating and cooling costs in 2 ways:

  • Automatically adjusting your thermostat when you’re not home
  • Automatically adjusting your blinds and shades for maximum efficiency

Automatically adjust your thermostat

ENERGY STAR estimates that turning the thermostat down when you’re gone can save up to $180/year. And while you don’t need home automation to do this, it makes the process more convenient

Two popular automation thermostats are the Nest Learning Thermostat and Honeywell’s Lyric. Both of these will automatically turn your thermostat when you’re not home. But they each work differently.

The Nest uses motion sensors to tell when you’re home or away. It then automatically builds a temperature schedule for your thermostat to reduce your energy use.

The Lyric uses the GPS of your phone to tell when you’re away and can adjust its temperature setting to save energy.

Automatically adjust your blinds and shade

With a home automation system, you can automatically raise and lower your blinds to save on heating and cooling costs.

For example, in the summer the shades can automatically close during the day to keep of the sun’s heat outside. And in the winter, they can shut at night to keep more heat in your home.

Reduce lighting bills

Installing motion sensors for lights lets them automatically turn on when someone enters and turn off when no one is in the room for a set amount of time.

This will help lower your electric bill if you have people who constantly forget to turn lights off in your home.
