The Journey to Generators

As the name suggests, a generator is a multifaceted piece of equipment that, literally, generates power. From homes to businesses to entire cities, generators have the ability to keep the lights on during storms and other disasters. They prevent chaos and disruptions by providing a reliable backup power source during emergencies and outages. Without generators, things would look different today, and many of the advancements we take for granted might not have existed.

So, how did we get to where we are today? The story of generators is a journey of innovation and improvement. From their early beginnings to the advanced models we use now, the history of generators is full of interesting developments and individuals who made it all possible. Let’s take a closer look at how generators evolved and became such an integral part of our way of life.

From the Start

The birth of generators came during the early 1800s, when English scientist, Michael Faraday, used magnets, copper disc and metal poles to create a piece of equipment that, he hoped, would produce electrical currents. Fortunately for him, and for us, he was on the right track! After many trials and errors, Faraday’s magnetic invention became successful, thus resulting in the first known generator called, Dynamo. Once this invention was released to the public, many scientists and other enthusiasts began to implement what we now know as “Faraday’s Law” into their inventions – which ultimately led to the introduction of the Electric Lighting System.

For the next several decades, the progression of generators would continue to rise and their ability to sustain commercial, industrial and residential buildings and spaces would soon become an integral part of life and production.

The Tesla Lab Progression

Let’s fast forward to the late 1800s when Nikola Tesla rose to fame. Tesla brought the most important update to the generator by successfully improving the AC motor; this motor was later named the “Tesla Motor” for …obvious reasons. Having this improvement allowed companies to create multiple power plants that generated mass power across cities and states. With this new improvement, production in the industrial and residential field really began to take off! Over the next century, scientists would use the Tesla Motor to create, reproduce and restructure the generator, in hopes that more improvement and resources could be used to help push society forward.

Modern Day

Throughout the last several decades, modern day technology has made its way into the DNA of generators. Today, a generator can range from a compact device the size of a small TV to a large industrial unit. Their use has expanded far beyond just powering businesses or factories. We now have portable generators perfect for weekend camping trips and automotive generators that keep our vehicles running smoothly, in addition to common home standby generators.

With the power of today’s generators, we can enjoy peace of mind knowing that even during storms or other emergencies, our homes, workplaces, and essential services remain operational. Could you imagine with how reliant we’ve become on technology, not having a backup power source?
